I’ve been gluten free for about five years now. Early on, I was trying different products, and found a number of them very disappointing. Case in point, gluten free bagels. The ones that I tried several years ago were so disappointing. It’s a bit trite to say they tasted like cardboard, but that’s a pretty good description.
I hadn’t tried another GF bagel until just a few days ago. Encouraged by the description of their bagels in the recent Fearless Flyer, I put bagels on my shopping list and made a trip to Trader Joe’s. I bought the bagels, cream cheese and lox so I could satisfy a desire that had been unfilled for such a long time. I also bought avocados, thinking I’d use the bagels for some avocado toast. (I love avocados.)
I lightly toasted the bagel halves and had bagels with lox and cream cheese, and I loved it. Very satisfying. So – thank you Trader Joe’s. You really delivered.
The popularity of corned beef and cabbage is demonstrated by the way the dish appears in an assortment of menu offerings. Most recently, I have seen it offered as a soup in one restaurant (I regret that I didn’t try it) and as an omelet at Benedict’s la Strata in Crystal Lake. Benedict’s is a popular choice with my husband and I, as noted in the review on the Restaurant page.
I was very happy with the omelet. The flavor of the corned beef was good – not too salty – and the portion was ample. Served with Benedict’s breakfast potatoes and a cup of fresh fruit.
A very satisfying, gluten free meal.
After hearing a recommendation for 750 Cucina Rustica, my husband and I decided to try it out. Glad we did!
The decor creates a very nice first impression, with planks on the walls, and some bistro-type seating. The staff was welcoming and very pleasant, and the menu offered many appetizing options. NOTE: gluten free options are not highlighted on the menu, but are available. Our personable waiter explained that they provide gluten free pasta, and there were entree selections that I could choose from. Pollo Rustica was my choice, after the waiter confirmed that there was no flour in the preparation. I was also tempted by the pesce bianco (whitefish), and I expect I’ll try that on my next visit. There are a number of
appetizers, salads and risottos, in addition to the GF pasta dishes, that I look forward to trying in the future.
I apologize for the half-eaten condition seen in the photo. I was hungry, and plunged in before remembering to take the photo. You can see that they prepare the dish on a grill plate which keeps the food hot throughout the meal. The chicken was juicy, and cooked just right. No toughness. It was served with generous, well-seasoned potato strips, with some peas and a side of spinach.
My husband had Tuscan braised beef short ribs, and said they were excellent. Your non GF dinner companions will have many tempting options.
The 750 in the restaurant’s name refers to the temperature of the brick oven that is used.
Close to our home, at 7 Jandus Road in Cary, IL, I know this restaurant will become one of our regular stops. If you are looking for a new place to try, I highly recommend it. 847-829-4933. Open from 3 pm till 9 or 10 on weekends.
